Kensington is a charming neighborhood in San Diego, California, with borders defined by Interstate 15 to the west, Interstate 8 to the north, Fairmount Avenue to the east, and El Cajon Boulevard to the south. The area features an array of Spanish Revival style homes, reflecting the popular architectural style of the late 192s. Notable architects such as Cliff May and Richard Requa have left their mark on Kensington’s character. The neighborhood boasts a vibrant “Main Street” along Adams Avenue, offering coffee shops, restaurants, a branch library and iconic entertainment venues like Ken Theatre and Kensington Café. It is best known for its popular street fairs and one of San Diego’s classic neon signs that hangs above Adams Avenue at Felton Street. The name “Normal” refers to the former State Normal School (teachers college), now serving as the Eugene Brucker Education Center for San Diego Unified School District.
Pedestrian activity is common in Normal Heights due to its urban location north of Balboa Park. Antique Row stretches between Texas Street on the west and Ohio Street on the east along Adams Avenue offering numerous antique stores. A landmark neon sign over Adams Avenue at Felton Street adds character to this vibrant neighborhood.
