North Park
North Park, located in San Diego, California, is not only a neighborhood but also a larger “community” as defined by the City of San Diego for planning purposes. Its boundaries are delineated by Park Boulevard and University Heights to the northwest, Florida Canyon and both University Heights and Hillcrest to the west, Balboa Park to the southwest, Switzer Canyon and the South Park neighborhood to the south, and Interstate 805 and City Heights to the east. The area signified as North Park was originally seen as extending up until 35th Street prior to Interstate 805’s construction.
The heart of North Park is considered to be at 30th Street and University Avenue. While it features mixed architectural styles from various periods; one notable area is Morley Field near Balboa Park’s Morley Field Sports Complex. This section boasts turn-of-the-century Craftsman Bungalows and California Bungalows; many designed by renowned designer David Owen Dryden leading it being named the “Dryden Historic District.” It encompasses homes along 28th and Pershing Streets bordered on their south by Upas Street up north to Landis Street.
North Park has a homey feel with its Craftsman cottages, cafes and diners, coffee shops; several microbreweries; boutiques; as well as hosting events like North Park Farmers Market which adds vibrancy. Creativity quietly thrives here with landmarks such as North Park Theater alongside Ray Street Arts District serving as creative hubs in this area known for its artistic flair.
