University City
University City (UC) is an active community and is home to the prestigious University of California, San Diego and the vibrant Westfield University Towne Centre shopping center. Additionally, it hosts numerous high-tech, bio-tech, and clean-tech businesses and research institutes that drive San Diego’s economy.
Often referred to as the “Golden Triangle,” UC is bordered by La Jolla on the west, State Route 52 on the south, and Interstate 805 on the east. The picturesque Rose Canyon separates North UC’s higher density apartments, condominiums, and townhomes from South UC’s predominantly single-family homes.
The planning area encompasses La Jolla Village to its west up to Gilman Dr., including Torrey Pines City Park, Torrey Pines Golf Course, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve as well as a thriving research hub in Torrey Pines Mesa. Originally intended for university faculty housing – hence its name – UC has evolved into a bustling business center.
The northern portion of this vibrant community houses the expansive University Towne Centre mall (UTC). Notably neighboring Clairemont to its south and La Jolla to its west; Miramar and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar border it on the east; while Sorrento Valley and Mira Mesa line its northern edge.
UC boasts a strong economy anchored by the prominent University of California campus occupying its northern sector. It has also emerged as a major corporate hub within San Diego with various professional service firms relocating here from downtown offices. Thousands commute daily from across San Diego County due to it being one of the region’s most significant economic centers.
