Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach, established in 1887 by Billy Carlson and Frank Higgins, is a vibrant coastal town located on the Pacific Ocean at the estuary of the San Diego River. Once home to a big mussel roast on the beach where lots were sold, it earned its name as “Ocean Beach”.
Situated about 7 miles northwest of downtown San Diego, Ocean Beach encompasses approximately one square mile (742 acres) and is bounded by natural landmarks including Mission Bay to its north and Point Loma to its south. The area also features notable attractions such as the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier – once recognized as one of California’s longest ocean piers before recent storm damage.
Local events are a key part of community life in Ocean Beach. These include popular gatherings such as the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook Off, a jazz festival at Newport Avenue’s foot in late September, an enchanting Christmas Parade in early December, kite festivals during May’s third Saturday, and an exciting Canine Carnival held every October. Additionally, residents can enjoy weekly farmers’ markets along Newport Avenue every Wednesday afternoon.
With stunning ocean views and rich history dating back to its founding years, Ocean Beach maintains its appeal for locals and visitors alike.
